Hell is about as cool as cancer.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  John 14:27

Today’s Christian Daily Devotional

A friend of mine is dying of cancer.  I have watched his strong, able body crumble into a frail shadow of his former self. When he was first diagnosed, the news completely derailed him. By his own admission, he claimed that because he is a doctor himself, he felt invincible.  This gave my friend an inflated level of confidence. He unrealistically assumed that he would be immune to the common maladies of his mortal body.

This terminal cancer continues to degrade and steal the life and vigor from this formally robust man.  My friend is a self-proclaimed atheist that has expressed anger at the very God he denies exists.   He not only refuses to believe God exists, but challenges Him by demanding a miraculous healing if God is in fact real.

My heart aches for him. God only knows why he is suffering like he is.  Many people who love God and many who hate Him have been plagued with this ruthless disease.  The bigger issue is: Where can this anger at God lead my friend?  Cancer is not fun, but hell is an eternally constant torment.

The peace of God can take his restless soul and give him an unspeakable tranquility that passes all human understanding.  Will you join me in prayer for all those suffering who need the peace that only God can provide?

“Dear Heavenly Father,

My friend is one of millions suffering from a terminal illness.  Sometimes there is no logical answer for the sufferings of this life.  Lord, help the ones who are hurting to stop looking for answers they will never get.  Instead, help them to focus on and decide to give up their anger at you.  Help them to find the peace that only you can provide.  Comfort them in their physical and emotional turmoil and shine a light of hope and healing through the love that they accept from the God who created them.  Draw them to you through this difficult season.  In Jesus’ precious name, let the power of your love heal the broken hearts and bodies of those who are suffering without you.  May they never walk through any kind of pain without you ever again.  Amen.”
