I get asked this question a lot: Can a person deliver demons from themselves?
Yes, they can. In my opinion self-deliverance is actually the BEST way to experience deliverance.
Here are some reasons why I believe this:
1. When a minister of God lays hands to deliver a person, sometimes the one receiving deliverance begins to look at that man as the ticket to their salvation. This can bring a false sense of security in another human being. This is far from God’s desire. God holds the power to deliver, not man. Man is just a vessel of faith to release the power of God.
2. To cast a demonic spirit out, you cannot be in agreement with it. This means you must truly turn your heart and mind away from your sin and onto God. Casting a demon out is just the beginning of living a demon-free life. Once you realize this, it becomes much easier to say no to the sinful activities that opened the door for that demon spirit to enter.
When I experienced the power of God pushing demonic entities out my body, it was a very humbling thing for me. Not once did I think: “I did this on my own.”
I came to the very quick realization that once I asked Jesus into my heart, this Bible verse was my reality:
“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19
After reading this verse and grabbing a hold of God’s truth, immediately, my faith arose. I came to grips with this fact—I had the power of the Holy Spirit living within me! Just like any other Christian—I was now able to enlist God’s power to cast demonic entities out of His temple. (Which was my body.)
“What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19
This is what the Bible says about faith:
“Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith; and be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.” Matthew 15:18
“…If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Matthew 17:20
Self-deliverance is totally possible if you have faith. If you aren’t feeling strong enough in the area of faith, I recommend reaching out to a friend who believes in God’s words and promises. Unfortunately, today, many professing Christians don’t believe in the power of God. Find a friend who believes that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He promises to do. This is the kind of Christian you should reach out to help in your deliverance.
What can stop deliverance from happening?
Usually, fear attempts to halt the deliverance process from even happening in the first place.
If you notice that the spirit of fear is attempting to overtake your situation, it’s important to keep in mind that allowing God into your demonic circumstance will only make things better, not worse.
This is the Bible verse I continually focused on when thoughts of anxiety almost paralyzed me from going forward:
“God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
Demon spirits actually speak. Usually, the person being attacked will be the only one to hear them. Familiar spirits are the kind of demonic entities that know you well. Often what they say can be confused with your own thoughts. This is because they know how you talk to yourself! They will attempt to inject fearful thoughts into your mind. These are the common types of things they’ll whisper to your heart:
1. “Things are going to get worse for you.”
2. “You’re just going insane.”
3. “Pretend this isn’t happening and it will go away.”
4. “Your friends will think you’re crazy and then you’ll really be alone.”
5. “Kill yourself and end your misery.”
5. “You’re a burden. No one understands you. Just end your life.”
6. “You have nothing good to offer the world.”
7. “There’s no good reason for your existence.”
Don’t buy the lies. God has a good plan for you and you will never discover why He created you and what He has for you, if you continually believe the lies that are being whispered over you.
How do you overcome these overwhelming voices?
You must focus on God’s word as your truth. You can’t allow your emotions or thoughts to rule what you do, because if that happens you’ll be putty in the hands of these very influential demonic spirits. They don’t operate with integrity and they will take advantage of your weak state. It’s much easier for them to manipulate and confuse someone who is emotionally fickle. But, they can’t compete with God’s word. That is why it’s important to allow God’s word to reprogram your mind. Here are some Bible verses to encourage you to focus on what God says, not on how you feel or what you think:
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13
“He that spared not His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” Romans. 8:32
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32
“Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” Romans 8:21
How does self-deliverance work?
I don’t recommend lying down, because sometimes coughing might release phlegm and this could be a chocking hazard. Place your hands on your stomach area, heart or head and began renouncing any sins that you’ve harboring. Do this out loud. Bind the spirits attached to these sins and command them to leave in Jesus’ name.
You will be saying something to this effect:
“I confess for engaging in the sin of pornography. I cast out the spirits of lust and fantasy. I cut off and break the soul ties that have entered into my life from this act of sin.
Lord, heal the wounds that the sin of lust and infidelity has put on my life, body, mind and relationships. Restore every part that has been destroyed by this sin.
I commit my body to you. Help me to have a healthy sexual relationship with the one I’ve made a covenant oath to. I make a covenant with eyes to only gaze on what is pleasing to you. If an image or a person activates lust in my heart, I will quickly bounce my eyes in another direction. I give you permission to prick my heart with conviction if I fall away from this promise. Your blood cleanses me and I will not allow the spirit of shame to prevent me from confessing my sins to you. I will fail, because I am human. But, you’ve promised to forgive me if I confess with a repentant heart. I embrace the reality of your forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
What will you feel?
You might not feel anything at all. The most common reactions to deliverance are coughing, burping, yawning. You might feel a tight, choking sensation. If this happens, make sure you are in an upright position. Before proceeding, have someone monitor you as you continue on. But, please don’t let any weird sensation stop you from continuing the process of deliverance, just use common sense and wisdom as you go forward.
When I performed deliverance on myself, it didn’t take long for me to feel God’s power expel those spirits right out of me. As soon as I came out of agreement with them, the demons had no ‘right’ to stay inside of me.
Here’s a personal example of my deliverance experience: When I was a teenager, I was sexually abused. This left me a very angry, bitter and resentful person. After placing my hands on my heart, I spoke this out loud:
“I renounce the sin of anger, bitterness and resentment. I bind all demonic spirits attached to this sexual abuse and cast them out. I chose to come into agreement with God. By an act of my free will, I forgive this man for hurting me and ask that God bless him. In Jesus’ name, I seal the door of this demonic entry with the His blood. Amen.”
Instructions for self-deliverance:
First, you must come to God in total humility and repentance. Ask Him to reveal the source of where the demons entered (He will bring to mind an experience, words spoken over you, memories of what you’ve done or what others have done to you, etc.…) As God reveals the entry point, you must be ready to give up the sin that has been the anchor for that demonic entity to make itself at home within you.
This is where you make the conscious decision to come out of agreement with the enemy, and come into agreement with God.
The Bible tells us what satan’s plan is for your life:
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy;” John 10:10 part one
This is God’s plan for your life:
“…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 part two
So, how does one determine what’s in agreement with God (our Spirit) and what’s in agreement with Satan (our flesh)? Galatians 5 gives us clear instructions on the difference:
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the Sprit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other; so that ye cannot do the things that ye should. But if ye be led of the spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:16-21
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law. And they that are Chris’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lust. If we live in the Sprit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” Galatians 5:21-26
How long will deliverance take?
It depends how ready you are to be healed. God honors and respects every person’s free will. Some are afraid of giving up all they know (their favorite sins, habits and choices that God can’t bless or isn’t in agreement with.) When this occurs, the healing gets halted. It cannot progress until that person is truly ready and allows God to finish it.
How do you find the demonic roots?
The easiest ways to pin point my demonic entry, was to focus on my emotions. Emotional discomfort is a wonderful way of getting clues to what is going on within your spirit. For example, if I felt uncontrolled rage, during my prayer time, I would ask God, “Why? Where is this coming from?”
Almost immediately, a memory would surface, or the face of someone who hurt me would come to mind.
As I began walking through my pain with the Lord, I dumped my emotions and hurt on the only one who could handle all my broken-ness—Him. God’s healing presence and love filled my heart, giving me strength to keep facing the heavy issues I’d buried deep within my broken heart.
“Then spake Jesus again unto the, saying, I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12
Instead of pushing down or hiding the painful things that are affecting your life, God wants you to bring them into the light. This is because it’s the only way you can be totally and properly healed. By being brave and taking this step, you’re now able to work through your issues and stumbling blocks.
The pain of your past is the filter your mind makes subconscious decisions with. Deep healing cannot happen unless you allow God to go into these dark places. Although supernatural deliverance can happen, usually a surface-y and general blanket prayer won’t touch the emotional root causes for your behavior and problems.
If you ask Him, God will show you where the damage in your heart originated. Allow Him into those places.
I prefer to think of these revelations as God’s spiritual surgery. Just like any surgical procedure, this may be painful at first, but removal of cancer is best if your goal is to live a full and healthy life. Sin is cancerous to your soul and spirit. It will slowly kill you if you don’t confront or uproot it.
Here are some promises God has for His children:
“Being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
When you feel discouraged, keep these verses in mind. They will anchor you during this process of deliverance.
Here is a prayer for you to get started:
“Dear Heavenly Father,
I have many issues. My mind, body and spirit are being tormented right now.
The reality is, I don’t know how to heal myself! I come to you with a heart that is open and ready for the things of God. Today, I completely commit myself to doing things your way.
Lord, forgive me for seeking sources of comfort other than you. In the name of Jesus, I renounce any occult practices I may have turned to in the past. I reject and renounce all fortuneteller readings, horoscopes, tarot card readings, palm readings, tealeaf readings. I close all paranormal entry portals that were opened from demonic video games, movies and websites. I cast out all spirits that have entered through Ouija board revelations. I cut the ties of any and all witchcraft divination and sorcery spirits from any pagan god activity. Lord, pull the fog of confusion out of my atmosphere. Blow your Holy Spirit and cleanse my air.
I completely renounce and repent for turning to any controlled substance like street drugs, prescription drugs and alcohol spirits. If any of these substances are currently in my body and blood stream, I command them to leave in Jesus’ name. Dry up that well, Lord. My mind is getting clear by the second. My head and heart are totally focused on you, God. I cast out the spirits of fear, doubt and confusion. Lord, please increase my faith and my determination to stick this commitment out until it is completely finished.
Lord, I am ready to take my healing to the next level.
Reveal to me where the source of this demonic activity has come. Give me the strength to let go of every thing you want me to. Help me to forgive easily and bless those who have hurt me. In Jesus’ name, I promise to continue on your path, and yours alone, Lord.”
