While I was going through the process of deliverance, I felt a strong impression from the Lord to develop the fruits of the spirit. I also felt compelled to press into the gifts of the spirit and discover which ones God had for me.
After helping people suffering from demonic issues, I began to fully understand why the fruit and gifts of the spirit are so important for maintaining freedom from demonic entities. Here is what the Bible says:
“When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and swell there: and the state of that man is worse than the first. Even so, shall it be also unto this wicked generation.” Matthew 12:43-45
These scriptures make it pretty clear that once a demon is cast out, that entity not only has the ability to return—but it can also bring additional demons even more wicked than itself! The Bible clearly warns us to prepare ourselves and understand how the enemy of our soul operates:
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
“To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also; for if I forgave anything, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.” 2 Corinthians 2:11
Matthew 12:43-45 implicates that if the house (the body of a person who has just been delivered of demons) is swept clean of demonic entities; that person must be filled with something to replace it. There is serious danger of even worse trouble coming upon him or her if this is not done.
I’ve witnessed many people who’ve gotten immediate relief from demonic deliverance. They’ve felt the strength that comes from the cleansing blood of Jesus only to retreat in defeat just a short time thereafter. The reason this happens is because that individual has not secured their freedom. Instead of serving Jesus with their whole hearts, they got sloppy, succumbing to the temptations of the flesh. They did not allow Jesus to truly fill every crevice of their lives.
True freedom from demonic entities doesn’t come with a routine prayer that goes something like this:
“Lord, fill all those empty places where the demons once resided, Amen.”
Maintaining deliverance means one must maintain a continual partnership with God. Every demon that is cast out of a person must have a gift or fruit of the spirit replace it. For example, if the demon of anger was cast out of a person, that individual must choose to pursue love. That person must choose LOVE every time the spirit of HATE tries to take over their mind and actions.
God has given every person the gift of free will. This will never be taken away, even with prayer. We can use our free will to activate the gifts and fruit of God or the lies and temptations of the enemy. Every Christian is responsible for filling their own house (mind, body and spirit) with the things of God and casting out and turning from the things of satan. (Hatred, unforgiveness, lust…) It is up to every individual whom they will serve.
“…Choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
The supernatural gifts of the spirit are found in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
1. Word of Wisdom
2. Word of Knowledge
4. Gifts of healing
5. Working of miracles
7. Discerning of Spirits
8. Kings of tongues
9. Interpretation of tongues
“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal for one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the self same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as He will.” 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
The fruit of the Spirit is found in Galatians 5:22-23
4. Long suffering
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23
So, how does one stay pure in heart and continue living a demon-free life?
This is what Jesus said:
“The branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” John 15:4
This verse gives a clear visual on how the spirit realm works. When a person stays connected to Jesus, the life of Jesus’ spirit flows into him or her. When we obey God’s lead, we are able to enjoy His love, peace and wisdom. When we make the choice to disobey, our fellowship with God is broken. This gives the enemy of our souls an opportunity to take advantage.
“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” John 15:10
Giving your life to God doesn’t entail simply saying a prayer. It means you give Him complete permission to take over. He is now allowed to possess and change your life. It means you’ve made a covenant with God in which your body is now God’s house.
“What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19
I’ve been possessed and controlled by devils. But, I’ve also been cleansed and filled with the power of God. Of course there’s a vast difference. Aside from the benefits of eternal salvation–the light, joy and hope that the spirit of God brings cannot compare to the temporary pleasure of sin and the oppression that comes with it.
I fail God everyday. But, I’ve learned to be quick in repentance for my sins, turning as quickly as I can from them. Working with God to live a righteous and pure life isn’t easy, but living a life of oppression isn’t easy either.
One must make a choice to dig in and fight for the freedom God offers. It’s always up to us. In the end, those who partner with God will always be victorious. And the victory isn’t just for this life. It is one that stretches into eternity.
“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12
